AC Knowledge: How Do Air Handlers & Condensers Differ?
Understanding the various elements of your HVAC system can help you to keep it running smoothly year after year. Here are some of the basics of air handlers and condensers and how they work to create comfortable temperatures inside your home in Duluth, GA.
What Is an Air Handler?
Air handlers, as their name suggests, circulate conditioned air from the HVAC system throughout your household. This interior component of your air conditioning system consists of an evaporator coil, a blower motor and fan and any filtration devices used to maintain good indoor air quality.
What Is a Condenser?
The condenser of your air conditioning system is a set of coils located outdoors with your compressor unit. The compressor receives refrigerant gas from inside your home and transfers it into the condenser coils.
The refrigerant gas is then circulated through the coils of the condenser while a fan blows across these coils. This allows heat to dissipate into the outdoor air and lowers the temperature of the refrigerant to return it to a liquid state. Liquid refrigerant is returned to the interior air handler to provide cooling power.
The Primary Differences
Air handlers and condensers are designed to work together to produce cool temperatures during hot weather. The filtration provided by the components of your air handler can promote better indoor air quality. Air handlers differ from condensers both in their location within your HVAC system and in their basic function. However, each is necessary to produce adequate cooling for homes in the area.
