Why Won’t My AC Unit Turn On?
When it’s a hot day in Peachtree Corners, GA, the last thing you want to deal with is an air conditioner that won’t turn on. Qualified AC service technicians want you to try not to panic and assume the worst. The problem might not be as bad as you think. You might not even need an AC repair.
Check The Breakers
Before assuming your air conditioner has gone kaput, check the system’s circuit breaker in the main electrical panel. Is it switched to the “on” position? If not, switch it on and wait. Did your AC turn back on? If so, great. If the breaker keeps tripping, call a service technician to troubleshoot what’s causing the issue.
If the breaker inside the main electrical panel is on, there’s one more place to look before calling for repairs. Some air conditioning units have shut-off boxes located near the unit. The shut-off box houses different fuses that can malfunction. If a fuse blows, call a technician to make the replacement.
Is The Thermostat On?
Although this might seem like a silly question to ask, many people forget to switch their thermostats to “cool” at the beginning of the warmer seasons. If you have a smart thermostat, you might not have it set up correctly. You can easily fix both problems.
Check The Outdoor Unit’s Shut-Off Switch
Have you recently had repair work done to your air conditioner, and now it won’t turn on? Check the outdoor unit’s shut-off switch. Service technicians turn off this switch when they work on the outdoor condenser and sometimes forget to turn it back on.
The Condensate Line Is Clogged
Anytime the condensate line clogs, the unit’s safety switch trips. The air conditioner shuts down automatically and won’t turn back on until the line is clear. Some people try to unclog condensate lines using a shop vacuum, but it’s better to let the professionals handle this simple AC service.
